February is National Children’s Dental Health Month
USD 465 and the Winfield Dental Society are working as a team to offer free dental screenings at your child’s school. These screenings are being offered to students enrolled in Kindergarten through 6th grade. The purpose of this screening is to check your child’s teeth for tooth decay and other dental problems. Your child will receive a letter to take home after completion of the screening that tells you about the health of your child’s teeth. This screening does not take the place of regular dental checkups.Dental screenings will be offered the week of February 6.
The dental screening is a limited exam without x-rays. Students will only be screened if the signed parent permission is returned to the school.Parent permission will be sent home with your student on Monday, January 30. Consent forms are due Friday, February 3. Dental screenings are optional.
Please contact the school nurse in your child's school for further information.

The Winfield High School Viking Band performed Monday, September 12, at the state fair in Hutchinson. For three days, the community of Hutchinson gives up their main street in the morning for parades. Each morning bands are sent out in groups, with their bus trailing behind to perform on main street. The Viking Band received a II+ Monday which was the highest rating of the morning for the street competition.
Congratulations to both groups for their fine accomplishments. Oh no! A louse in my house!Head lice can cause concern and frustration for any parents. They are very common and have been around since the beginning of time. Any one of any age with hair is susceptible to head lice and has nothing to do with cleanliness. According to the Centers for Disease Control “Head lice can be a nuisance but have not been shown to spread disease.” Parents may find it helpful to regularly check their child’s head for signs of infestation. As noted by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the chance of getting head lice in the classroom are minimal. It is helpful to remember that head lice do not hop or fly, they crawl. While head lice may be spread through contact with combs, hat, etc, this is much less likely to occur. Most cases of head lice occur through direct contact with the head of someone who is infested. In the school setting, students may be referred to the nurse for head checks if symptoms are evident, such as frequent scratching, visible bugs, etc. Click here for more information on identification of head lice and helpful hints to combat infestation. More information is available at the Centers for Disease Control website, www.cdc.gov, or may contact the City-Cowley County Health Department at 221-1430. Feel free to contact your child’s school nurse.
